The Essential Trustee Programme

CST believes that the proposition of governing a School Trust is fundamentally different from governing a maintained school.

Overview

The CST Essential Trustee Programme gives you a practical grounding in Trusteeship. It builds the domain-specific knowledge that you need of governance, education and finance, reinforces the values of public life, and identifies the behaviours that will make you an effective board member.

The programme provides high quality Trustee development for busy people. 16 hours of learning is delivered by Trust governance experts in eight virtual seminars across two terms to fit with your other commitments and create opportunities for ongoing discussion and reflection.

Who is it for?

This programme is designed to both meet the needs of individual Trustees and provides a unique opportunity for whole board development.

Individual participants who will benefit most from this programme are:

  • Newly appointed Trustees to Academy Trust boards.
  • Established Trustees seeking to refresh their knowledge and understanding.
  • Governors and leaders from maintained schools considering joining a School Trust.
  • Trust school leaders looking to develop their understanding of Trust governance.

Whole boards participating in this programme will gain:

  • A shared development experience that brings Trustees together.
  • Developing a collective understanding of the role and purpose of the Trustee board and reinforcing a common language of Trusteeship.
  • The opportunity for executive leaders to participate alongside Trustees to develop a strong understanding of Trust governance across the leadership group and build a wider sense of team.
  • The ability to add value to the programme by setting up additional opportunities for reflection and discussion about the topics it covers in your Trust.
  • A strong foundation for creating ongoing Trustee development plans.

How will you benefit?

  • The principles of financial oversight and risk management for Trust boards.
  • Your responsibilities for safeguarding of children in your Trust.
  • An overview of current trends and policy issues for the Trust sector.
