A sample meeting structure is outlined below, in practice, each mentoring journey is individual, led by the mentee in agreement with the mentor.
Duration |
Activity |
0.5 day |
Mentor preparation: Reading A day of reading for the mentor to understand the context of the trust and trust governance. A set of core documents and key data will be requested, and you may also add other specific items that you want your mentor to be sighted on. |
0.5 day |
Establishing the partnership A meeting to get to know each other, to establish current and future needs, identify goals and set the objectives for the year. |
0.5 day |
Mentor preparation: Meeting observation Your mentor will offer to observe a trust board meeting, to gain a fuller understanding of the trust board dynamics, culture, and relationships with key strategic partners such as the governance professional, CEO and other trustees. This meeting observation can take place at any point during the year, feedback can be general or focussed on one aspect. |
2.5 days |
Half termly meetings Meeting frequency and agendas are set by the mentee to suit their needs. A good starting point is to agree a half-termly meeting to maintain momentum and allow time for action to take place between conversations. |
1 day |
Flexible time The remaining day can be used according to need. Choices include scheduling additional meetings, setting time aside to be used as and when the need arises or asking for additional guidance in a particular area. |

The first year’s fee is £3,575+VAT for CST members, and £4,400+VAT for non-members, plus expenses for meetings that are carried out in person.
