The role of trust members

Members in school trusts play an often overlooked, but important role in trust governance. Members understanding the remit and boundaries of their responsibilities is essential for ensuring effective governance across the whole trust.

This short course will provide members of trusts with a comprehensive overview of their purpose, their powers and responsibilities. The two-hour seminar will explore both the theory of the member role and its practical application, by taking an in-depth look at the guidance around members and discussing case studies to support delegates to understand what this looks like in practice.

We will explore how members can work effectively with the board of trustees, including the information they should receive, how to establish channels of communication, managing separation of layers, and discussing circumstances when intervention may or may not be appropriate.

Who is it for:

  • All trust members, from newly appointed to experienced members who would benefit from a refresh.

  • Trust governance professionals who support the members.

  • Trustees, particularly the chair, who need to understand their reporting duties to members.

You will gain:

  • An overview of why trusts have members, how they are appointed and key behaviours

  • The core duties of members and how to fulfil these effectively

  • An understanding of common challenges and how to avoid these
