Into Film
Who we are
Into Film’s mission is to inspire and support young people to learn, and to realise their creative, cultural and career aspirations, through film and the moving image. The core Into Film programme is free for UK state schools, colleges and other youth settings, thanks to support from the BFI, awarding National Lottery good cause funding, and through other key funders including Cinema First and Northern Ireland Screen.
Our UK-wide programme provides screen industry careers information and advice, support for young filmmakers, and brings the power of moving image storytelling into classroom teaching. We also run the Into Film Festival which enables more than 330,000 pupils to visit the cinema for free, as well as the Into Film Awards - the UK’s leading showcase for young filmmaking talent.
What we do
Into Film’s three core programmes are supported by the BFI awarding National Lottery good cause funding: Teaching with Film, Careers and Progression, and Young Creatives. Engaging with our programmes and embedding film throughout your Trust, improves outcomes and prepares students for the future by developing essential, digital, creative and literacy skills.

How we help
Into Film is establishing effective place-based programmes of activity in a number of Trusts across England, delivering curriculum- and skills-focused professional development, screen careers workshops for students and more. Our webinars, face-to-face training, online courses, teaching resources and articles cover a wide range of topics including whole school change, numerous wellbeing themes, literacy, filmmaking challenges, as well as partnerships with the film industry, such as Aardman Animation Studios.
Our programme encourages deep and active learning and facilitates young people taking control of their own learning processes. It supports educational attainment for pupils across the curriculum and empowers teachers with an exciting new means of assessing learning. One example is our course on leading whole school change, which helps leaders identify areas of focus, create a sustainable model of staff professional development, provide ongoing support to film leaders cascading skills to staff, and access ongoing support. Across our projects we have gathered evidence on the impact film has on pupils' engagement, attainment and interpersonal skills. One project we ran with the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, 93 per cent of learners went from working towards to working at the expected standard when engaging with film in their literacy lessons.
We work with 158 local authorities across England, supporting teachers, leadership, schools and Trusts to improve learning, engagement and aspirations. We also provide labour market information about the screen industries and employee and employer engagements, which support centres with their Gatsby Benchmarks and careers activities.
We champion and realise the potential of film, cinema and the moving image to create inspiring, inclusive learning experiences for all children and young people. We are committed to providing an inclusive, sustainable and diverse environment, both in our internal practices, and with the films we promote and the resources we create, and we live by our shared organisational values:
- Inclusive - we champion diversity and difference in our team and programme and will continue to evolve to ensure that we are inclusive and welcoming to people of all backgrounds, cultures and abilities
- Inspiring - Film has the power to bring learning to life and inspire positive change, and we support educators to use it in their teaching and across their trusts. As a team we inspire each other to be the best at what we do
- Impactful - Impact drives everything we do, and we use evidence to inform and improve the best and most accessible film learning experience for all children and young people.
Following one of our free training sessions, a teacher at a Trust we recently worked with shared that they: "…particularly appreciated the emphasis on specific and precise language, which is expected for children to learn through active recall.”
