Coram Life Education SCARF
Who we are
According to the NHS digital survey 2022, 18% of children aged 7 to 16 years had a probable mental disorder. They were less likely to feel safe at school, less likely to report enjoyment of learning or having a friend they could turn to for support. Coram Life Education & SCARF, the UK’s leading primary PSHE education charity, exists to tackle this issue.
Coram Life Education is the UK’s leading charity provider of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education and we
have 35 years’ experience delivering memorable, engaging wellbeing education workshops, online ‘SCARF’ resources and affordable teacher training.
In the last year, we worked with over 2,700 primary schools – 1 in 6 - reaching 588,000 children through high-quality, educator-led workshops for pupils (delivered via ‘LifeSpace’ pop up classroom, in the school classroom or live online) and online resources called ‘SCARF’. SCARF represents our values for children of Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship, and consists of a comprehensive, fully resourced, progressive PSHE scheme of work for 3-11 year olds. Building on our sector and curriculum expertise, we offer free and affordable teacher, school, governor and trust-wide training to help schools develop their confidence and skills in all aspects of PSHE and RSHE.
More information about our workshops can be found at https://www.coramlifeeducation.org.uk/ and our SCARF resources can be found at https://www.coramlifeeducation.org.uk/scarf
Coram Life Education is part of Coram, the UK’s first and longest serving children’s charity, which consists of specialist charities and expertise committed to creating positive change that lasts a lifetime for children and young people. CLE enables children to gain the skills they need for tomorrow, giving them the chance to shine.
Evidence shows that being educated in core life skills early on in life gives children the best chance of developing the resilience, confidence and practical skills to navigate life on and off line, empowering them to make changes to last a lifetime. Our vision is for children to acquire the life skills needed to thrive.
What we do
Coram Life Education is a trusted partner with over 2,700 primary schools. Our workshops for children 3-11, give schools the opportunity to develop and promote social and emotional skills through our Personal Social Health and Economic education (PSHE) curriculum. In addition, online SCARF teaching resources meet statutory requirements for Relationships, Sex and Health Education and support safeguarding, giving young people the skills and confidence to develop healthy relationships, both on and off line, in preparation for adolescence and adulthood.
Our network of educators, based in local school communities across the UK, deliver Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education workshops, and we go way beyond the curriculum to help children understand, explain and regulate emotions, equip them to navigate risk, to stay safe on and off line, and to develop healthy relationships, in preparation for adolescence and adulthood. Our approach develops children’s knowledge, skills and attitudes, and is designed to give pupils a voice and for them to feel empowered, able to identify and articulate their needs and feelings and to make healthy choices.
During our educator-led workshops children meet ‘Healthy Harold’, our giraffe puppet mascot and friends, have discussions and watch short films about healthy eating, drugs – legal and illegal – and their effects, the body and how it works, friendships and their influence, and how choices and behaviours can affect children’s health and education outcomes. Coram Life Education’s work includes challenging social norms – misperceptions of peers’ engagement with risky behaviour – to engender more positive behaviours. New for this year our Mental Wellbeing workshops provide children with the skills and positive mental attitudes they need in order to be resilient and bounce back from setbacks. Evidence-based and with practical strategies known to enhance mental health and wellbeing, the workshops include in-depth learning about how the human brain works and how to translate this knowledge into positive action that supports mental wellbeing.
Meeting all DfE requirements for statutory Relationships and Health Education SCARF consists of lesson plans, online planning, mapping, assessment and Ofsted tools to give busy teachers skills and confidence to embed a comprehensive Relationships and Health Education, PSHE Education and Wellbeing programme throughout the primary years. SCARF offers a whole-school approach to promoting behaviour, safety, achievement and wellbeing. Over 50,000 teachers subscribe to SCARF, which is available as a standalone subscription or as part of an ‘educator workshop + SCARF’ package offered by our delivery partners in local areas
In September 2023, we launched our ‘Secondary SCARF’ scheme of work, a fully-resourced scheme of work for 11-13 year-olds, covering all the statutory requirements in 36 lesson plans per year, across six half-termly units and specialist teacher training. The scheme of work covers six suggested half-termly units providing access to quality-assured PSHE lesson plans and resources created by Coram SCARF and other organisations, including The Daniel Spargo Mabbs Foundation, saving you time in finding the right resources that suit your school's needs.
Alongside educator-led workshops and SCARF online teaching resources, Coram Life Education offers high-quality, evidence-informed training for individual teachers, whole-staff groups and multi academy trusts. We work hard to make our training relevant and valuable to all participants - we also create bespoke courses to meet schools’ precise training needs. We provide specialist training and support for all aspects of Relationships, Sex and Health Education, including the statutory and non-statutory elements of sex education that fall within the DfE Health Education requirements. We also provide training for schools’ wider PSHE curriculum, including specialist areas such as Early Years.
How we help
Evidence shows that school-based programmes of social and emotional learning have the potential to help young people acquire the skills they need to make good academic progress as well as benefit pupil health and wellbeing.
Research commissioned by the Education Endowment Foundation shows that children have increased challenges following the pandemic, which negatively impacted children’s learning, their sense of safety and security, connections with others and their social and emotional development. Evidence shows that on returning to school, pupils aged four and five were struggling to cope with large groups and frightened of physical contact, after growing up in the era of social distancing. Schools turned to us more than ever over the last three years because our work focuses on children’s mental health and resilience.
CLE vision is for all children to acquire the life skills needed to thrive. We know we have the greatest impact on children, when we work in partnership with schools and trusts to meet the needs of their pupils.
