Apps for Good

Who we are

Apps for Good believes that all young people should be empowered to act on the things they care about most.

We provide free computing courses to schools, giving teachers ready-made educational content, so young people from all backgrounds can develop computing and essential skills to create a brighter future through technology. We work with teachers to understand the challenges schools are facing, so have designed our courses for both computing specialists and non-specialists to simply 'pick up and deliver’.

With over a decade of experience, we’re an education technology charity that is proud to partner with leading brands to keep our course content 100% free of charge to schools, as well as giving students the opportunity to directly benefit from their industry expertise.

What we do

We provide free Skills Builder accredited innovative computing courses thanks to the generous support of our funders.

We have three courses, each of which is mapped to the four nations computing curriculums for KS3/S1-3 and meet 2 of the Gatsby Benchmarks for Good Career Guidance:
  • Innovate for Climate Change
  • App for Social Action
  • AI for Good

Each course is made up of seven sessions and supports students working in pairs and teams to design and create an app prototype for a community that they care about. All courses have been fully planned and resourced, ready for specialist and non-specialist teachers to deliver within computing curriculum time or as an enrichment or extra-curricular club.

All courses have the following features:
  • Knowledge building around the theme (Climate Action, Social Action, AI for good)
  • Ideation activities used in industry
  • A virtual feedback session, led by an Industry Volunteer, on the student’s app ideas
  • Coding and designing an app prototype in App Lab (a free tool from Code.org)
  • The opportunity to enter Apps for Good’s National Showcase and be profiled on our website

Our dedicated team supports educators to deliver our courses in their classrooms and are interested to find out about the impact on students' learning and future career ambitions. For all education related enquiries and support delivering an Apps for Good course, please email education@appsforgood.org.

Many schools across the UK already benefit from our innovative computing courses. Including the LiFE Multi-Academy Trust based in Leicestershire. Here’s what one senior leader had to say about working with Apps for Good:

"Engaging with industry partners from Accenture really opened students’ eyes to the careers that might be out there. In addition to aspirations to become a YouTuber or a professional footballer, many students are most familiar with more traditional careers. This opportunity presents them with inspirational role models that some learners may not ordinarily have access to and students that don’t consider themselves to be ‘techie’ are awoken to the idea that careers in tech could actually be suited to their skillset.”

- Steve Hall, Senior Leader, LiFE Multi-Academy Trust

How we help

At Apps for Good, our team is inspired by young people, and committed to working with teachers, students and industry. We collaborate with our board, volunteers, industry partners, trusts and educators for deeper impact. We believe everyone should be included, and empower those around us to make a difference. We encourage each other and celebrate our successes, remaining agile in our approach.

As technology continues to transform the way we live and work, more young people need tech innovation and essential skills to succeed in their future careers. Schools are under-resourced, yet have an important role in delivering a computing curriculum that is relevant and engaging to learners.  We know that technology can help address big social challenges and is most successful when it’s created by those with lived experience.

The UK is currently facing an all time high tech shortage. The UK Commission for Employment and Skills disclosed earlier this year that 43% of STEM vacancies were not being filled due to a shortage of applicants, leaving tech skills in even higher demand compared to previous years. 73% of young people agree that digital skills are essential for their future job or career. However, despite our growing digital world in which young people spend 4-5 hours online a day, only 43% of young people report learning advanced digital skills at school.

We also know that the tech sector lacks diversity with only 9% of tech employees reported to be from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Currently, 4 boys choose computer science GCSE for every 1 girl and women make up just 17% of the tech workforce.

The Essential Skills Tracker 2024 Report confirms that nearly all teaching professionals (98%) see essential skills as important for their learners’ employment opportunities, but only 3% of teaching professionals believe that the current schooling system prepares young people for life ‘very well’, and only 2% for work.

With this in mind, all of our courses are mapped to the KS3 Computing Curriculum, are Skills Builder accredited and meet 2 of the Gatsby benchmarks for good careers guidance. We believe that young people can shape their future through technology. We don’t just teach them to code - we teach them the skills they’ll need to become the tech innovators of tomorrow. Students build their products using real world processes that are aligned with industry. We connect our young people to Industry Volunteers to support their app ideas by providing feedback and career insights. Our content provides the essential skills needed for the future of work improving young people’s confidence, problem solving, collaboration and communication skills. Young people are empowered by solving problems they care about. We inspire them by teaching how technology can be applied to have a positive impact. We support them to design products relevant to them that will change their world for the better.

As a charity we continue to learn, improve and share best practice with our peers and communities, regularly releasing blog content and joining roundtable discussions, hosting lunch and learn sessions and events.
