Deciding to join a trust: Guidance for maintained schools on engagement with stakeholders

This document should be read alongside the Department for Education’s guidance for maintained schools applying to join a school. It provides an overview of good practice on public engagement and consultation at each step of the process.

DfE advises that you let staff members, parents and pupils know that your governing body is considering applying for your school to join a trust. If you decide to apply to join a trust, you will need to consult stakeholders on whether your school should convert.

Minor updates were made in September 2024 to reflect revised terminology.
