What the lead trustee for SEND needs to know and do
The SEND trustee role can be instrumental in ensuring high quality, inclusive education. The Academy trust governance guide makes clear that boards must retain responsibility for strategic oversight of SEND practice across their trust. This oversight has become essential in the context of increasing recognition of special educational needs, financial and resourcing pressures on trusts, changing policy requiring greater inclusivity in mainstream settings, and the potential development of resource bases and in-school units.
This seminar draws upon CST’s thought leadership publications A good life and Five principles for inclusion to support SEND lead trustees to develop inclusive culture, receive robust assurance of the trust’s specialist provision, and to champion the needs of pupils. Together we’ll look at compliance as a starting point and explore how trustees can make sure there is an equitable quality of education for all children within their trust.
