Building an accessible classroom
One of the most important enhancements that technology has brought to the modern classroom is the creation of a more accessible learning environment, with many schools now coining the term ‘invisible inclusion’ in relation to technology. Devices allow for students to tailor their learning experiences to their individual needs, negating the need for students to be separated from their peers in the name of accessibility as in years past.
Building an equitable environment
This idea of technology aiding in the promotion of equity throughout schools and trusts does not stop with accessibility. There are many families across the country who are not in a financial position to provide their children with the latest tech, leaving them at a disadvantage to their classmates. When schools are able to provide students with devices, they place all pupils on a level playing field with access to the same information and resources as their peers both in the classroom and at home.
Building a digital curriculum
Some school trusts have taken digital learning a step further by fully integrating technology into their curriculum. Workbooks have been replaced by devices, essays with interactive documents, written feedback with voice notes. While the content of the curriculum has stayed largely the same, the ways in which students can interact with that content has seen a significant shift, allowing for more personalisation and character in work submissions so teachers can get more insight into students’ depth of knowledge. It can also promote a more productive and collaborative learning environment for all.
Building digital skills for the future
The education and technology sectors are progressing together. As the classroom develops, so too does the workplace. Jobs that would not have even existed 10 years ago are now commonplace, and a recent UK study found that 82% of job listings require digital literacy skills as entry requirements. By placing technology in the classroom and acquainting students with devices and the skills to use them effectively, schools are playing a monumental role in preparing pupils for the future.
As technology continues to progress, it is our hope that educators will refrain from purchasing the latest devices for fear of being left behind, but rather that they make their purchasing decisions based on what they would like to achieve using the technology they invest their time and funds into. Technology can make all the difference for children of all backgrounds, but it is essential that teachers know how to get the most out of their tech before implementing it in the classroom.
At Sync, we support schools and trusts around the UK in the adoption and deployment of Apple technology. Our approach covers everything from helping schools introduce the latest devices into the classroom, guiding CPD and curriculum strategies. Meanwhile our work with Apple Financial Services and recycle scheme ensures older devices never go to waste.
