Sector organisations to develop an Academy Trust Governance Code

28th April 2021

The Confederation of School Trusts (CST) and The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland are delighted to announce a joint project to develop an Academy Trust Governance Code. Like the Charity Governance Code, the Academy Trust Governance Code will be sector-led. This reflects that the Trust sector has reached a stage of maturity where it can define standards of good governance.

Academy trusts are charitable organisations. A sector specific code will increase Trustee awareness of the importance of good governance in the successful delivery of their charitable purposes and help them understand what good governance looks like. It will also enable academy Trust boards to implement the highest standards of governance that are proportionate and effective for their Trust.

The Code is intended to define good governance that supports regulatory requirements but will not be a regulatory tool. The Department for Education and the Charity Commission will have observer status on the group which will develop the Code.

Commenting on the announcement, Leora Cruddas, chief executive of CST said:

"Drawing on the excellent practice of the Charity Governance Code, and the well-established governance codes in other sectors, the development of our Code is a defining moment – a mark of our maturity that we are moving beyond regulatory compliance and determining what expert governance looks like in our sector.”

Louise Thomson, head of policy at The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland said:

"Ultimately, a sector specific code will increase academy trustee awareness of the importance of good governance in the successful delivery of their charitable purposes and help them understand what good governance looks like.”
